Image Credit: WAM Image 1 of 4 1234 Sirte, Libya: Arabs leaders Sunday ruled out renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks unless Israel halts all new colony building and urged US President Barack Obama to keep up his opposition.

At the end of a two-day summit in Libya, they urged Obama to remain loyal to his "initial and key position" to work to halt Jewish colony on Palestinian land that posed a "dangerous obstacle" to peace efforts.

After talks in Sirte, a committee of foreign ministers from some member states produced a resolution saying that a halt to all colony-building activity was necessary for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations to go ahead.

But that decision was not adopted by the full summit and, in a sign of the lack of consensus, Syria's foreign minister said his country would not recognise the document as representing the view of the Arab League.

Israeli raid

Even as the leaders were discussing peace efforts, several Israeli armoured vehicles including bulldozers entered Gaza Sunday apparently to destroy tunnels near the site of deadly weekend clashes, according to witnesses.

The forces moved around 500 metres inside Gaza, dug large trenches and fired warning shots to keep farmers away, the witnesses said.

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Mousa said after the summit that an extraordinary meeting of heads of state would take place later in the year to deal with outstanding issues.

He acknowledged the urgency of taking a collective decision on the Israeli-Palestinian talks.

"Within the next few weeks we have to decide what to do: whether to continue with the negotiations or to completely shift course," he told a news conference.

New measures

Arab leaders mulled legal and political measures to confront Israel and adopted a resolution to raise $500 million (about Dh1.83 billion) in aid to help bolster the Palestinian presence in occupied Jerusalem, Mousa said.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told AFP that the fund is aimed at "enhancing the Palestinian presence in [occupied] Jerusalem," which is the home of the Al Aqsa mosque compound, Islam's third holiest site.

Arab League officials said the fund will be used to improve infrastructure, build water wells, hospitals and schools as well as to provide financial compensation to Palestinians evicted from their homes by Israeli authorities.
