Using Games to Teach Reading

Kids often get bored when doing reading worksheets and other written English assignments. If your child detests doing these activities it is still important for you to work with them on their reading. Many parents are unsure of what kind of household activities their family can do to instill reading skills. What they do not know is that fun games can actually serve as reading tools, saving them from having to hear their children's whining and complaints that often go along with extra worksheets. These games include Scrabble, UpWords, crossword puzzles, word searches, scavenger hunts and computer games.

Scrabble and UpWords are great games to introduce to your children. This is because both games encourage people to create words out of tiles, creating a wonderful lesson in vocabulary acquisition and retention. Unfortunately, this game is a little advanced for younger children. If you have kids who are still struggling some with their spelling and reading, make sure to create teams. Pair adults and children together, or put older siblings with their younger siblings to create the teams. Encourage the younger players to study the tiles and help to create words. Additionally, have the kids look up words in the dictionary. As your children become older and more confident with their vocabulary then the family will be ready to move away from team play and work as individuals.

Crossword puzzles are another reading, spelling and vocabulary building activity. What is great about crosswords is that they are lightweight and are easy ways to occupy children on long car or plane rides. These puzzles are also available for all skill levels, so the whole family can have fun trying to figure them out. There are also crossword dictionaries that can be purchased to help people with crossword clues. This may be a fun present to get for your child, along with some age appropriate crossword books.

Not only can a child learn from games like Scrabble and crossword puzzles but they can also practice their word recognition skills with word searches. Word searches help children with letter and word recognition. Try doing a word search with your child. Before they search for each word ask them to read the word aloud and see if they can give you a definition of the word. If they are unsure what the word is, pronounce it for them a couple of times and look up the meaning in a dictionary together. This is a fun way to introduce new words to children! Kids also have fun making their own word searches and crossword puzzles. Technology has made this task very easy because there are programs you can purchase or download that create these documents in seconds.

Parents do not have to rely on conventional games to help their children with reading. You can also play games likes scavenger or treasure hunts. Children have to read items on a list or read clues in order to win or find their treasure. If a kid misreads a part of their clue or list, then they will be unable to finish. If you are creating a scavenger or treasure hunt for young kids, make sure that an adult or older child is with each group. Encourage the youngest kids to do most of the reading and have the older participant act more as a guide. Parents can also encourage reading through the creation and acting of plays.

There are also computer games that help to strengthen student's reading skills. These games can be purchased at most game or computer stores. Many online tutoring centers also use games as part of their interactive lessons. Children have fun with these lessons because the games show them the skill they are learning. Parents love the use of these games because they keep their youth attentive and focused on their lessons! Reading games are also available online at kid's sites. Don't forget to check out the great games that are located in our 'Just for Kids' section!

Families often play games together. If parents pick the right types of games, they are not only encouraging the family to have fun but also learn at the same time. Most board games require some reading, even if it is just for the rules. Find as many opportunities as possible to encourage your youngster to read; no one in the family will regret these experiences! Additionally, when playing these games, discuss with your children afterwards about the skills they practiced. It is important for children to realize how much they are truly able to succeed with their reading skills. These games will give your child the confidence they need in the classroom to achieve the grades they deserve.
